Welcoming School Communities

CAL is collaborating with Welcoming America on the Welcoming School Communities pilot project to develop a program model designed to engage school communities in the creation of a more welcoming climate for newcomers. Incorporating a holistic approach that features evidence- and research-based components, the project will channel the participation and perspectives of the entire ecosystem of educators, parents, students, and communities in the effort to promote a welcoming nature within the school community.

The Welcoming School Communities model will serve as a comprehensive approach to integrating newcomer families, the local school, and the surrounding community through positive interactions and practical steps to inclusion and integration in K-12 or university settings.

This project was launched with an interactive event for key stakeholders held in September 2014. Learn more.

Assessment of Study Abroad

CAL staff served as language and testing experts on a study of students from four institutions (Dickinson College, Georgetown University, Rice University, and University of Minnesota) that focused on the effects of study abroad on language learning, intercultural awareness, and interdisciplinary development. CAL staff examined differences in language fluency between students who stayed home and those who studied abroad.
